I couldn't decide on what to write for my first post. I could write about being happy it's not Kobe vs. LeBron in the finals. That's old news by now. I could write about desperately wanting to see UP, but I'll leave that commentary and excitement for a later post. I could write about my street getting repaved this week and having to wake up to construction workers every morning. That's just too boring because who really cares about
that.
Let's talk about Conan's first show hosting The Tonight Show. I watched it, I wasn't laughing at every joke but it was a good first show. The opening credits paid an homage to the previous NBC peacock, all fuzzy and sounding like it was being broadcast over radio. Conan's opening skit, if you want to call it that, was him trying to hail a cab from NYC to LA to host the first show. Long story short, he can't get a cab so he starts running cross country (referencing his promo spots of running on the beach in full suit and tie) with stops at Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Arch in St. Louis, and the Rocky Mountains. He finally gets to LA (Universal Studios lot, where they actually film the show) and get in the back door because he left the key in NYC. Hahaha, a decent opening.
When he walked out on stage for the very first time, he did so to the old Late Night with Conan theme and did his usual string dance. He said many times he wasn't going to change his show to cater to an older audience the whole time leading up to last night, and he wasn't kidding.
Much has been said about the new set they built for him. It's huge and state of the art. "Our ceiling is tall enough to have the Hollywood "D" pass underneath!" They bring out a giant D and walk it across the stage only to have a smaller doorway crush the top half of the letter. Pretty good twist!
Just before bringing out Will Ferrell as his guest he talked about his 1992 Ford Taurus and how loyal he is to it. "Living in LA means having to have a flashy car" (or something to that effect). They show him driving around town and having women stop and stare at his rusty, not exactly pimp, ride. At one point, one woman takes a look at him and instantly gets pregnant. I laughed pretty good at that. In the end, he picks up a blonde but as the camera fades out he is being towed while sitting behind the wheel and the girl riding passenger. Not bad, staying true to his old jokes.
What I thought was the most creative and funniest bit he did was when he conducted the Universal Studios tour. He's so uneducated and uninformed about the tour he just ad libs his way through it, but ad-libbing I think is one of his strongest suits. At the end of the tour he suggests taking all four tour buses onto public roads and into traffic! How classic is that?! As you can imagine these buses are not made for public roads so they don't exactly travel...um...fast. Top speed could not have been any faster than 15mph is my guess. Anyway, at the end of the tour he treats all tour passengers to a shopping spree at the 99 cent store hahaha! What a parting gift!
Onto Will Ferrell...he's not my favorite funny guy in movies but I understand why he was the first guest. He's got Land of the Lost to promote which comes out Friday. Plus he's a big name, a big draw. He came out on stage like he was emperor of Rome back in the day being carried by four men. His explanation, "I didn't want to upstage you on your first night."
I know I didn't give a very good description of the hilarity and creativeness of the premiere episode but like I said it was a good first show. I really hope Conan succeeds, he's done pretty well so far in his career, having gone to Harvard, writing for SNL and The Simpsons, and hosting his old show. Mostly I want him to do well because he is just naturally funny and to shut all the critics up about him not being able to "fill the big shoes" Leno is leaving behind. I mean if he fails, who are they going to get to replace him? Jimmy Fallon? Ugh. Yuck!
Until next time...
Brandon
